The Kenya government allows diplomats / expatriates to import vehicles and personal effects duty free. Diplomats / expatriates working in an organization such as below are eligible:
- United Nations (UN) agencies and bodies
- Diplomatic missions and embassies in Kenya
- International organizations accredited in Kenya
- Bilateral and multilateral development partners
- Recognized charitable and non-governmental organizations (subject to approval)
Eligibility Requirements
- Must hold a valid diplomatic or official passport
- Must possess a valid work permit / diplomatic ID issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Must be a bona fide employee of the eligible organization
- Vehicle must be for personal use of the diplomat / expatriate and their immediate family
- Must comply with the terms of the bilateral agreement or headquarters agreement with the organization
Documents Required
- Valid passport (diplomatic/official/service passport)
- Diplomatic ID / Expatriate work permit
- Letter from the organization/embassy confirming employment and eligibility for duty-free import
- Proforma invoice / bill of lading / air waybill for the vehicle
- Certificate of origin of the vehicle
- Insurance cover note
- KRA PIN certificate
Restrictions
- The duty-free privilege is limited to one vehicle per eligible person every certain period (varies by agreement)
- Vehicle cannot be sold or transferred to a non-privileged person within a specified period without payment of duty (usually 3 years)
- Commercial vehicles may be subject to different rules
